rachel ann austin

Rachel has long been passionate about creating new, beautiful things. The map painting series began nine years ago with a love for old maps.  Her paintings begin with a map and are covered with acrylic medium, oil paint and ink on wood panels.  Because of the layers, each painting takes between a week and two weeks to complete. Each one is named after a location on the map and framed with handmade wood frames.

Rachel continues to explore a number of themes with her paintings.  Many of her current works resonate the simple beauty in the spare and innocent scenes of everyday life.  Rachel is a full time artist living in Portland, Oregon. When not painting, Rachel can be found digging in the garden or stomping in rain puddles with her four year old daughter, Adelaide and husband, Jon.
